This goal is the biggest deal. Basically, if we don’t make this one happen, we can’t travel full time. We have to have an income.
Like I said in our very first blog post summarizing all of our goals, we realized before we ever had the idea to travel full time that remote jobs would be the ideal scenario for our lifestyle and personality types.
We had the desire for more flexibility for taking longer trips than just two weeks per year and long weekends. This is basically where all of this stemmed from. We hoped eventually we could go somewhere warmer for a couple of months in the winter.
Another big reason for wanting remote jobs is that we both prefer to work more independently and in an environment without a lot of stimuli and distractions. We realized working remotely, in a place and at a time that would allow us to be the most productive and focused, would be the best fit for both of us.
We’ve also both had or have partly-remote jobs that have given us insight into how we would like it and handle it (we love it). There are certain aspects of John’s current job that can be done remotely, but there is a big part of it that can’t be – the videography. I worked for myself for seven years, and had the freedom to work when and where I wanted, other than when I was photographing or meeting with clients.
Where does that leave us? Basically at a dead end as far as a career path goes. The career paths that we are both on do not allow us to be 100% remote. We’ve thought through all possible scenarios and options for over a year, and this is what we’ve come up with at this point in time.
John decided to pursue web development. It has been an interest of his over the years, and he felt like the reality of it being something that can be done remotely was the nudge to go for it. He is currently going to code school and loving it! It will be interesting to see what his job search will be like once he’s done with classes.
For me, I don’t have quite as clear of an idea. I am still figuring out which direction to go. I am gaining ground though. I have already been doing some freelance photo editing for years, and I enjoy it. I just need to do more of it. My goal is to find more photographers to edit for. This summer, while we’re still in Omaha, I plan on doing some freelance photography, like shooting weddings, to add to our savings as much as I can. I am currently working at a real estate brokerage three days a week as well, and I have asked about the probability of my position becoming a remote one. It’s a possibility in the future, but there’s no timeframe. We will see if anything comes of that. I am also interested in writing and graphic design, but I will need to sharpen my skills in both of those areas. So, to summarize my chaotic mess of words, I will probably not find a specific full-time job with a company. I will be a freelancer doing a few different things.
That is where we are at the moment. I will give updates as we go!
