Hooray! Goal number two is complete!
We spent months researching (surprised much?) what type of tow vehicle we should get, and what we could get for our budget. We knew the travel trailer has a GVWR of 5800 pounds, so that is it’s maximum weight. That means we needed to find a vehicle with a tow capacity of at least that much. Fortunately, most tow vehicle options are well above that.
After much deliberation first on if we wanted an SUV, van, or truck, we decided a truck with a topper would be the most functional for us. We like the idea of a separate indoor (clean) space and an outdoor (dirty) space for storing and hauling.
Once we figured that out, we had to decide what make and model we should choose.
The best strategy for buying a used vehicle is to watch listings for weeks. See what comes up. Get an idea for what the going rate is. Then we decide what will fit our budget best, and what we are willing to compromise on.
This was very beneficial for us. We really bounced around among numerous options.
Eventually we decided to go with a Ford F-150.
We decided on a very firm budget of $8000. Hopefully less. We financed our travel trailer, which was not our intention starting out. We definitely didn’t want to also finance a vehicle. We knew we could get for sure $6000 for both of our current vehicles when we sell them. We had enough in our savings to pay cash, so that’s what we decided to do. Selling both vehicles would basically cover the cost of the truck.
We found a 2010 F-150 XL extended cab with a tow package and a topper for $7500. It was owned by a construction company and was maintained by a fleet mechanic. We realized it was the ideal scenario. The maintenance wasn’t skimped on since the company paid for it, and the company also just wanted to get rid of it, and wasn’t worried too much about getting their money back, unlike an individual seller would more than likely be.
Overall, we are very happy with what we got for our budget. We know it isn’t impressive or perfect, but it fits all of our needs and most of our wants, so we are excited to have it and start towing with it!
